• Arraignments of all crimes and violations occurring in the confines of Stony Point, Tomkins  Cove, Jones Point, and portions of Bear Mountain State Park.
• Jurisdiction of trials for misdemeanors and violations occurring in the confines of Stony Point, Tomkins Cove, Jones Point, and portions of Bear Mountain State Park.
  
• Jurisdiction over various environmental/conservation violations (including those occurring on the Hudson River)
  
• Jurisdiction over parking violations and violations of the Town Code.
  
  

Small Claims Actions/Civil Suit

If your claim is for $3000 or less, and the defendant resides in, or has a place of business in the confines of Stony Point, Tomkins Cove, or Jones Point, you may avail yourself of the Stony Point Justice Court. The cost of filing a Small Claim is as follows:

• $10.00- Cash Filing fee to the Court (for claims up to and including $1,000.)
• $15.00- Cash Filing fee to the Court (for claims over $1,000 up to and including $3,000.)
• $20.00- Civil Court Filing Fee.*

Fees are payable at the time of filing. Small Claim/Civil Actions are heard twice a month in the evenings.

If your claim is settled prior to the hearing date, both parties must notify the Court in writing. If your claim proceeds, you must be prepared at the time of the hearing to prove your claim. This mandates that all evidence and witnesses must be present as scheduled.

*It is the responsibility of the plaintiff to prepare the paperwork and have it served.

Vehicle & Traffic

Traffic Infractions (non-criminal) may be answered by mail. Please enter your plea in the appropriated box on the summons and mail to the Court by the date on the summons.

If you are pleading GUILTY, you will be sent a fine letter. Fines may be paid by Cash, Money Order, or CERTIFIED CHECK ONLY.

If you are pleading NOT GUILTY, you will receive a notice with your TRIAL DATE approximately one month before your official trial date.

Adjournment requests must be submitted in writing and mailed to the Court, or faxed to (845) 786-3087.

Parking Tickets

Parking ticket violations (including those issued at Bear Mountain State Park) are $25.00* if you plead guilty. Complete the required information on the rear of the ticket, check the appropriate plea box, sign your ticket, and return to the Court by the date on the ticket. You will be sent a fine letter. (Payment must be made by Cash, Money Order or CERTIFIED CHECK ONLY.)

If you wish to plead not guilty, complete the required information on the rear of the ticket, check the appropriate plea box, sign your ticket, and return to the Court by the date listed on the ticket. You will be sent a trial date approximately one month prior to your official Court date.

*If the parking ticket is for an uninspected vehicle, or registration violation, and not for an actual parking violation the fine is more. Your fine notice will inform you of the total due.

Suspensions

If you receive a suspension notice from the NYSDMV, you must answer that notice before the suspension date listed on the notice. Failure to have that notice in the Court before that suspension date will require that the motorist pay a $35.00 non-refundable, State Mandated, suspension liftfee for each ticket, in addition to any fines that may be due. Return the whole suspension notice to the Court, do not tear off any portion.

If there is no amount due listed on the notice, and you would like to plead guilty, call the Court to find out what your fine will be.

If you wish to plead not guilty you must post “bail” to receive a new court date. (Call the Court to inquire as to the bail amount) At the time of trial, if you are found guilty, you may apply your bail to the fine. If you are found not guilty, your bail will be returned. If you fail to appear, your bail is forfeited, and your license is suspended.

If you wish to handle your suspension in person, payments can be made at the window Monday through Friday, 9-12 and 2-3:30. No payments will be accepted while Court is in session. (Court days are usually Tuesday mornings, and all day Thursday.)
